394: Revelations at Midnight
The night was still, the air crisp, as Jake and Bauer stood under the sparse light of a street lamp, the remnants of their heated conversation hanging between them like the night’s chill.
“You know, Bauer, it really isn’t any of my business who you’re pining after these days,” Jake said, his voice cutting through the cold air with an edge of mockery. “But when you find them, you'd better let me know, huh?”
Bauer, his expression stoic yet troubled by the conversation, paused before stepping away, his voice low.
“What does it matter to you, Jake? Yes, when I find them, I’ll let you know.”
Jake gave a short, humorless laugh, shaking his head slightly. “I can see it in your eyes, my friend. You’ve already found them, haven’t you? Your face says it all.”
The assertion made Bauer stiffen. He turned slightly, looking back at Jake, the streetlight casting shadows across his face.
“And what if I have? It’s my life, Jake. I don’t need your approval or your judgment.”
