Valerie watched the screen expectantly, then let out a long sigh. "So much for plucking Lucky's hair to dodge lightning. That plan's a bust."
Lucinda was about to reply when her phone buzzed. She glanced at the message, and her expression shifted.
"Val, guess who's dead?"
Valerie looked up from her experiment. "Is it Jay?"
She had already estimated Jay's likely time of death. If nothing unexpected happened, it should have been around these days.
Lucinda stared at her, impressed by the eerie precision of Valerie's foresight.
"The message is from a friend of mine who works at the hospital where Jay was being treated. I was worried the Woodwards might try something against you, so I asked her to keep an eye on them. But instead, she sent me this."
Valerie removed her goggles and mask, then calmly powered down the machines humming around the lab.
"If I'm right, Jay's death was Sonia's doing."
As she spoke, she turned to the computer
