Chapter 34
"Well?" Jeffrey tilted his head, sweeping his gaze over the chaotic gallery. Renovation was in progress, with dust filling the air. It was filthy, rundown, and half-ruined. "Natalie, you call this living well? How is this better than life as Mrs. Foster?"
Three rhetorical questions in a row. In his eyes, Natalie was merely putting up a front. He did not believe she was doing that well or truly letting go. In reality, all it took was a single softened word from him, and she reverted to the Natalie of the past.
She had loved him for a full 17 years. How could love simply disappear because she willed it so?
Jeffrey intended to see just how long she could hold out, and how long she could keep up the act. He had seen through her.
Natalie straightened her back and replied, "It's far better than being Mrs. Foster. At least I have dignity, and I can make my own decisions."
"By my side, you lacked nothing in food or clothing."
"I'm not starving to death now, either, Jeffrey."
