Simon POV
The night had thinned into that quiet lull where most of the pack was winding down. The lanterns from the clearing still swayed in the breeze, casting long shadows over the grass. I stayed back after the proposal ended, watching the way Noelle held Charlie’s hand like she had finally realized it belonged there all along.
He found me a few minutes later, his grin brighter than the lantern light. “There you are,” he said, his voice rough in that way emotions sometimes leave a man’s throat. “I was looking for you.”
I crossed my arms, pretending to study him like I was assessing an injury. “You don’t look half as pale as you did before she said yes. I had say you survived.”
Charlie let out a short laugh, shaking his head. “Survived? I feel like I just jumped off a cliff and landed in one piece. Barely.”
“Then you owe me,” I said, smirking. “If I hadn’t dragged you here tonight, you would still be pacing your cabin, working up the nerve for another six months.”
