CHAPTER FIFTY-NINE - The Unwanted Visitor
"Objectivity?" Claire repeated, her voice rising slightly. "I was hired based on my qualifications and experience. My relationship with Mason has nothing to do with my ability to do my job."
"I know that," Evelyn said soothingly. "But perception is important, especially now. I'm just advising you to be extra careful. Keep your head down, focus on your work, and try not to get caught up in the gossip that's bound to circulate."
Claire nodded stiffly. "I understand. Is that all?"
"For now, yes. Thank you, Claire."
As Claire left Evelyn's office, she could hear the whispers and feel the stares of her colleagues. She sat at her desk, trying to focus on her work, but her mind kept drifting to Mason and the crisis he was facing.
The day dragged on, filled with tense meetings and hushed conversations. Claire barely saw Mason, catching only glimpses of him rushing from one conference room to another, surrounded by lawyers and executives.
