I didn’t bother saying anything else—just let out a cold chuckle and ended the call right there.
Looking down at the recording she’d clearly meant for me to keep, I couldn’t help but pause and think about it.
To be fair, I believed some of what Grace Mills said. Ronald Wright really was the devoted, protective type—but not with me, obviously—with her. She wasn’t lying about that part.
But that line she kept repeating—"I took something that belonged to her"? That completely threw me off.
It wasn’t even the first time she said it. When someone repeats the same sentence like that, it’s usually not for nothing.
I fiddled with my phone, turning her words over in my head.
Back then, I’d clung to Ronald like my life depended on it, blinded by love. I knew he didn’t feel the same, but I still wouldn’t let go. We were still technically married when I died.
