I could picture the fury in his eyes just from his voice over the phone. I wiped away a tear and spoke hoarsely, “Sorry… You're already at the courthouse, right? Something came up and I can't make it…”
Before I could finish, Ronald sneered, his voice icy cold.
“What now? You’re the one who wanted the divorce, now you’re the one who doesn’t show up? What game are you playing?”
My mouth opened, but I didn’t bring up my uncle. Ronald never believed a word I said—any explanation from me would sound like an excuse.
Besides, before marrying him, I’d already cut ties with Grandpa's family. He genuinely had no idea I even had an uncle.
With a raspy voice, I said, “Let’s reschedule. I really can’t go today—sorry.”
He let out another cold laugh and hung up. I had no clue if that meant he agreed or not.
Biting down my emotions, I dragged myself back to the ER waiting area and sat down blankly. Emma wasn’t at the hospital, so I was about to text her when a message popped up.
