Seemed like he noticed me coming in—Ronald lifted his head, his deep eyes flickering with some emotion I couldn’t quite read.
“Well, aren't you something? First thing you do is fire my receptionist, and then you try to blackmail me with a recording.”
I chuckled, not hiding the sarcasm. “Well, maybe if you'd just answered your damn phone and given her a heads-up, none of that would’ve happened.”
Guys like Ronald live and breathe for their reputation. That recording? A total embarrassment—he’d have to deal with it himself.
He gave a short, mocking laugh. No idea what he was scoffing at, and honestly, I didn’t care. I casually opened the box with the diamond necklace and asked with fake curiosity, “Did Nicholas give you this necklace?”
Ronald glanced at the necklace. “And why do you care?”
“I’m just curious. Not really your style though, is it? You’ve always been into boring black, white, and grey stuff. This shiny thing doesn’t really scream ‘you.’”
I knew Ronald well—boring, predictable
