Arthur didn't seem interested in talking to me either. He just ate his dinner quietly, every move precise and elegant, not saying a single word.
When he was done, he slipped on his shoes and left without even looking back.
A few minutes ago, in bed, he'd been so gentle. Now he was like a stranger. The sudden shift made my stomach drop.
I couldn't eat anymore. I cleared the plates in silence, tossed the leftovers, and headed straight for the hospital.
Arthur was gone. There was no reason to stay, and I couldn't stop worrying about Kevin. I had to see him.
By the time I got to his room, Kevin was awake. Surgery had gone through, but he still looked fragile, almost drained.
The moment I stepped inside, everyone in the family turned to look at me. Not a single word. My mother's silence hit harder than anything else. Her eyes were ice.
