Chapter 148: Keeping My Distance
After giving Arthur a sponge bath, I stretched out beside him, wide awake. If he really had other women, why hold on to this thing with me? Was this just a game for him?
I tossed and turned, restless. Every cell in my body wanted to shake him awake and demand answers. Where were you last night? Who were you with? But I had no right to ask. Not with what we were.
By the time the sun came up, I was exhausted. The faint smell of perfume on his skin lingered like a cruel joke, and it gnawed at me all night.
I knew Arthur would never belong to me, not completely. But somewhere along the line, I'd let myself fall. That terrified me more than anything.
I got up early and made breakfast. When Arthur finally came out of the bedroom, hair damp, robe tied loose around his hips, he looked put together but worn out, like a man who'd had a long night.
"I drank too much last night," he said flatly, sliding into a chair.
"Mm."
I didn't look up, just kept eating.
