My mother's voice snapped through the phone, sharp and accusing.
"Mom, that's not what I mean," I said quickly, trying to keep calm. "It's just that renting a bigger apartment in L.A. costs a lot. I don't have that kind of money right now, and it'll be a while before I get paid."
I hated how defensive I sounded, but I didn't know what else to say. Of course I wanted Kevin to have a good place to recover. I just couldn't afford it.
"How about this? I'll find something smaller for now. When I get paid next month, I'll look for something better, okay?"
