When they got to the hospital, the doctors rushed Maria into the emergency room. The second the doors swung shut, Grace collapsed onto the floor like a deflated balloon. Her face was drained of color, and her whole body felt cold—unrealistically cold.
Ava Nelson tried pulling her up. "Come sit on the bench. The floor’s freezing."
“I really can’t move,” Grace mumbled, waving her hand weakly.
Ava sighed and sat down beside her. “Maria…”
She stopped there. She’d wanted to say something comforting, but the words just wouldn’t come out. Comforting her right now felt pointless—like using a heating pad in the summer or pouring ice water into a snowbank. Totally useless.
Kevin Taylor rushed through the emergency room doors and crouched right in front of Grace. Grabbing her arms tightly, he looked pale as a sheet. “The cops are outside. They’ve got a few questions.”
