Julian strode into the room, dressed in a black shirt and tailored slacks, his long legs carrying him in brisk, purposeful strides.
But Dawn craned her neck, peering eagerly past him. But there was no one behind.
Her face immediately fell.
She glared at him, his voice sharp with frustration. "Where's my granddaughter-in-law? You promised you'd bring her today."
Julian's eyes darkened.
He had originally planned to bring Rosalie along. He wanted to take her to visit Charles' grave and show that he had finally settled down.
Yet the thought that her heart might belong to someone else shattered his resolve. He couldn't—and wouldn't—bring her to the one who mattered most to him, Charles' grave, to pay her respects, until he was sure her feelings for him were undivided.
"She was busy and couldn't make it," he explained, his voice cool and detached.
"Bullshit!"
Dawn didn't believe him at all. She grabbed the redwood cane beside her and swung it at Julian.
