Chapter 87: Dull Heartache
Around five-thirty in the evening, Christina began tidying up her desk and shutting down her desktop computer. She had just gathered her belongings when the landline on her desk rang. With a frown of dissatisfaction, Christina picked up the receiver and held it to her ear.
Before she could say anything, the voice on the other end sent a wave of shock through her entire being.
"Hello, can I speak to Mr. Qiu?" That voice...
Christina froze, her mind stuttering as if her entire being had been put on pause. She couldn’t feel anything except for a dull ache in her heart. Her eyes and mouth were wide open in an expression of stunned shock.
A million thoughts raced through her mind, yet she couldn’t manage to utter a single word. It was as if someone had seized control of her body—an invisible shadow wrapping its arms around her, caging her in.
She knew that voice, she always did. But right now, she chose disbelief over reality. Denial felt safer than grief.
"May I know who’s speaking?"
