"You're the birthday girl. How do you want your steak cooked?" Hugh lifted a finger, and in an instant, someone stepped forward with the lunch menu.
Formalities could wait. What mattered most was making sure Serena didn't go hungry.

Hugh watched her grow more comfortable and more at ease while making requests. The frost in his eyes melted just a little.
He handed her the menu with a faint smile. "Seafood risotto sounds good too."
"Carbs will just make you sleepier. I still plan on staying up a while," Serena said, casting him a mock scolding look. She picked up the menu and ordered the same dish for him, too.
