Crestwood Apartments was far from Hilltop Manor. Elise finished her pumpkin pie in silence, watching the trees slide past the window.
Henry sensed her lack of energy and refrained from trying to make conversation. When they finally reached Hilltop Manor, he said, "I'll wait for you."
"Alright." Elise walked up to the ornate front gate and pressed the bell. With a soft click, the gate opened, and the front door inside swung wide as well.
She was about to slip in when she realized the one opening the door was Samuel himself. He wore a gray crew-neck sweater and black slacks, casual and unguarded, his hair falling loosely over his forehead. The sharp, distant edge he usually carried was nowhere to be seen.
Elise didn't linger on the sight. "I won't come in," she said coolly. "Bring me the divorce papers. I'll sign them here."
Samuel turned and went inside, returning with two sets of documents.
