As the SUV faded into the distance, the person inside the car made a call.
"Sir, it's done."
"Is he dead?" Harold asked.
"Not sure. We didn't dare get out to confirm—Ms. Larson might recognize us. But even if he's not dead, he's definitely crippled."
A twinge of disappointment prickled Harold upon hearing Xavier had survived the accident. Still, knowing Maddie, he figured she'd probably give up on Xavier as long as he was no longer the same.
"Make sure the scene is cleaned up properly and give Maddie a convincing explanation," Harold warned. "Find a scapegoat to take the fall. If she finds out anything, you're finished."
Only then did Harold feel a weight lift off his chest. But the worry lingered—he wouldn't truly be at ease until Maddie finally left Xavier for good.
