“Valentina?”
A shaky, familiar voice broke the silence of the chamber, hoarse and in disbelief.
I lifted my head slowly, the weight of blood and bruises pulling at me, as I heard my name. The door of the cell groaned open and my gaze met Atlas’s wide ones.
His gaze flicked from my broken form to Carmella’s lifeless body, crumpled across the floor. Her throat slit, blood pooling like a dark halo.
“Goddess… Atlas muttered, his breath shaking as he crouched beside her. His hands hovered over the blood but didn’t touch. “She—she’s dead…” He whispered..
I didn't say anything, keeping quiet as my eyes were cautious of his every movement.
The scent of blood clung to the air. Stale and heavy, mixed with the iron tang of the dungeon stones. My wrists throbbed against the enchanted shackles; every tug a reminder of how weak they thought I was, how breakable.
