It was deathly quiet. Perseus, leading the way, crossed the shallow stream and directed his flashlight toward the wooden houses. There was no sound, no movement—nothing.

Ever since stepping into Ysle Springs, Ramona hadn't encountered a single living being. She had heard the occasional chirping of birds earlier, but now, the silence was so profound that her heartbeat seemed deafening.
