Chapter 10

The snow started falling again, the cold wind carrying tiny snowflakes that stung Heidi's face. She had just ordered a cab service on her phone, with an estimated wait time of seven to eight minutes. A police patrol car passed in front of her, then suddenly reversed and stopped beside her. The window rolled down, revealing a young man with a smile on his face. "Heidi! What a coincidence!" Heidi looked up to see Jackie. She nodded politely at him. Jackie leaned out from the passenger seat, looking at her with concern. "Heidi, where are you headed? Where's Captain Cadwell?" Maverick? Wasn't he at the station today? It was Saturday, so he should be on duty. Heidi's heart skipped a beat, but she casually replied, "He's busy." Jackie scratched his head, looking oblivious. "Oh, Captain Cadwell requested two days off this morning. Is something going on at home?" Heidi froze. Maverick hadn't called her since last night when she left Susan's house, yet he had requested two days off.
