Chapter 29
Heidi reached into her pocket and felt the small tin of mints she always carried. It was what she relied on during class to fight the urge to smoke, a stand-in to help her quit.
With a soft click, the tin opened. She shook out a single white mint and popped it into her mouth, crushing it hard between her teeth.
A cooling sensation spread across her tongue, easing some of the ache in her chest. "Fine, then don't," she muttered around the mint. "I won't bother you anymore, okay? I'll go find someone else."
She really was feeling discouraged. Maverick's heart was made of stone—impossible to warm and sharp enough to hurt anyone who tried to warm it.
Out of spite, Heidi unbuckled her seatbelt and was about to push the door open when her wrist was seized.
"What are you eating?"
She froze. Her lips parted, her tongue brushing over her teeth, leaving behind a faint chill. "Mints…"
"I want one."
"Huh?" She didn't understand. He had turned her down, and now, he wanted to take candy from
