Maverick's expression remained calm, so much so that Heidi wanted to tear into him.
"That's not the case," Heidi said, deliberately softening her voice. "Maverick and I were just messing around. Earlier we were playing truth or dare, and I lost. I was talking nonsense."
"Using a divorce as a dare?" Rachel scolded her. "You're married now. You need to have some sense in what you say and do."
"Yes, yes, my fault. I'll reflect on it," Heidi obediently replied.
After another five minutes of being lectured, she finally managed to placate Rachel, promising that the two of them would come home for dinner in a few days.
Only then was the call ended.
She tossed the phone back onto the bed, utterly speechless.
"Captain Cadwell," she dryly said, "how old are you this year? Did you just graduate from kindergarten? Running to the adults to tattle. Do you actually find that amusing?"
"As long as it works," Maverick replied. He grabbed her wrist and pulled her onto his lap. "I can't keep you
