When Maverick emerged from the villa, Heidi glanced at her watch. Thirty minutes had passed.
"Did I keep you waiting?" he asked.
"What were you discussing that took so long?"
Maverick started the car without looking at her. "Nothing much. They asked about work."
Heidi glanced at him sideways.
What a liar.
Susan never cared about his work.
Heidi hummed in response, reclining her seat. "Let's go."

Heidi woke up early on New Year's Eve despite not having slept soundly.
Maverick had been home and on vacation for the past few days, and this bed had seen quite some action.
Heidi didn't want to go along with it, but she couldn't resist. In the end, it was always a hurried affair.
Seeing that she was awake, Maverick leaned over and kissed her forehead. "Good morning. Happy New Year, Heidi."
