The first rays of dawn painted the mountains gold as Kane's security team prepared for our journey. I watched from the sanctuary steps, impressed by their military precision—the careful loading of supplies, the coordination of multiple vehicles, the checking and double-checking of weapons.
"These are reinforced with silver thread," Kane said, approaching with what looked like a standard protective vest. "They'll help shield you from both physical attacks and certain magical influences."
His hands were unexpectedly gentle as he helped me into the protective gear, our eyes meeting briefly as he adjusted the straps. Something passed between us in that moment—an awareness that went beyond words, beyond our careful boundaries.
"Thank you," I said softly, conscious of how close we stood.
Kane nodded, his eyes lingering on mine a moment longer than necessary before he stepped back. "Safety first. We still don't know who was behind the mountain ambush."
