The seconds trickled away. I couldn't be bothered to waste time waiting for Connor's response.
As I stood to leave, the anger on his face morphed into nervousness. For the first time in our seven-year relationship, he said apologetically, "Don't leave just yet, Jane. I know I've been neglecting you because I was too focused on work. It's why you did such a stupid thing.
"Don't worry. I won't blame you for that. All you need to do is pay the penalty for the breach of contract. As long as you come home with me tomorrow, I'll pretend as though it never happened. I really miss your cooking, Jane."
