Beatrice shook her head at my words. "I wouldn't call it comfort, but you picked the right drink. Right now, you really are free."
Owners of bars and taverns were never the quiet type, and Beatrice was no exception.
"Joshua, I'm not one for gossip, but I am curious. What's your plan now that you're divorced?" she asked.
I nodded in thought and said, "Make good money. I want to give the people around me a better life. I've got a lot to make up for."
My vague response made Beatrice frown slightly. "That answer was as good as saying nothing."
As we talked, the tavern gradually filled with customers. Most were regulars, some of whom I recognized.
Of course, they didn't recognize me yet. They greeted Beatrice as they walked in.
Not all of them were regulars, though—there were newcomers too.
Just a couple of miles from Riverstone Tavern was North District College Area, so it wasn't uncommon for students to drop by to unwind.
