Jennifer arrived shortly after, but by the time she got there Edward had already left. The meeting was finished, so she offered to drive me to Hannah’s school to pick her up.
While we were on the way, I suddenly felt an uncomfortable tightness in my chest. Instinctively, I pressed my hand against it, trying to steady my breathing.
Jennifer noticed immediately.
“What’s wrong?” she asked with concern.
“I’m not sure,” I replied. “My chest suddenly started hurting a little, but don’t worry. I’m fine now.”
She frowned as she glanced at me.
“Are you sure? Do you want me to take you to the hospital first and have it checked?”
I shook my head.
“No, it’s not necessary,” I said, although the strange feeling still lingered in my chest. I couldn’t explain it, but for a brief moment the uneasiness felt almost overwhelming.
By the time we returned home after Hannah’s birthday celebration, it was already evening.
