Sara watched his retreating figure as he went upstairs. When he finally closed his bedroom door, she lowered her head and quickly finished her breakfast. She even cleaned up and washed the dishes.
When she came out of the kitchen, Ted rang the doorbell. She quickly grabbed her bag, took one last glance upstairs, then quietly left.
Spencer felt like the world was spinning. He was pretty sure he had a fever.
In reality, he hadn't fallen asleep after getting into bed. Instead, he'd been listening to the sounds coming from downstairs.
The clinking and clanging from downstairs brought him back to four years ago, before they were divorced. She used to bustle around the kitchen every morning, making him breakfast. After she left, the only thing he ever learned to cook was oatmeal.
The sound of the door closing told him she was gone. Spencer lay in bed in a daze.
