As Luca prepared to leave, Rebecca felt a sudden panic rise in her chest. "Luca, wait," she called out, rushing to embrace him one last time. "Be careful, please. I couldn't bear it if anything happened to you."
He held her tight, his voice a low rumble in her ear. "Nothing will happen to me, amore. I promise you, we'll get through this together."
With a final kiss, Luca was gone, leaving Rebecca alone with Helena in the quiet of the safehouse. She spent the next hour making the place as homey as possible, unpacking their clothes and setting up Helena's play area.
As night deepened, Rebecca found herself constantly checking the windows, startling at every rustle of leaves outside. She knew she was safe here, but the isolation only seemed to heighten her anxiety.
The next morning, Rebecca woke to the chirping of birds outside. For a moment, she could almost pretend they were on a family vacation. But reality came crashing back as she remembered why they were here.
