Joel remained silent.
I picked up my bag, ready to leave. "You don't need to explain anymore. I get it. You guys are a match made in heaven. I will step aside."
He grabbed my wrist. "You don't understand anything. That day on the rooftop—"
"Enough!" I shook his hand off. "It's over between us, Joel."
I turned and stalked out of the restaurant, but my tears betrayed me and rolled down uncontrollably.
It turned out that even after three years, I still couldn't stop getting affected by him.
Back at the hospital, I buried myself in work until a nurse came to inform me, "Dr. Henderson, there's a patient in the ER asking for you by name."
I rushed to the ER, only to find Elise lying on the bed.
Her complexion was pale, and blood seeped from her arm.
"What happened?" I asked the nurse.
"It was a car accident, but the injuries aren't too severe," she reported. "She insisted on waiting for you."
I walked up to the bed. "Why were you looking for me?"
