After taking his revenge, Baxter felt nothing but emptiness inside. He walked out of the storage shed and went straight to the second-floor bedroom.
Vanessa's body had been brought back and was now lying in a specially made ice coffin.
Baxter crouched down and touched her face. All he could feel was the cold, gritty texture of frost. His heart sank.
"Ness," he called her name softly. "I've made Tabitha pay for what she did. Does that bring you any comfort? Could you forgive me for the foolish mistakes I've made?"
It wasn't just a foolish mistake, it was a serious one with major consequences.
Every time he recalled what happened, his chest ached. If he hadn't blindly believed Tabitha, Vanessa wouldn't have reached the point of despair that led her to set herself on fire.
Just like Tabitha said, if she was the main culprit, then he was the accomplice. She had already paid the price, but what about him?
Deep down, he probably already knew the answer.
