Chapter 796 Mr. Barkworth, You’re So Cunning
At such a time, Ivan refused to wallow in sadness alone. He ought to make his friend suffer alongside him.
As Michael drank expressionlessly and said nothing, Ivan started talking again. “I think Ivanka has really gotten over you.”
The look in Michael’s eyes grew colder.
Seeing that, Ivan was even more excited. “Technically, when she showed up at the party with Jonah and demanded a divorce, she had already given up on you.”
Michael continued to drink in silence.
Ivan clinked his glass against Michael’s. “See the things she did after that? She didn’t need you at all, let alone approach you. If you didn’t approach her yourself, she would simply disappear before your eyes.”
Michael did not react, but Ivan thought that the wine glass nearly cracked in his tight grip.
“Hey, look at you. Do you still refuse to admit that you have already fallen for her?”
Michael immediately snorted coldly. “Does she deserve my attention?”
“Doesn’t she? If not, why would you bring her out here? Is it really just for work?”
“Why else would I do that?” Michael glanced at him emotionlessly.
“Lies! You wanted to spend time with her! You handpicked the roses yourself. Even though you did it under Grandma’s coercion, I knew that you would never give in if you were truly reluctant.”
When Michael frowned, Ivan said, “But you did it anyway. You proved yourself to her and professed your love to her in front of everyone in the company. You allowed the media to spread the news to deter your rivals. Mr. Barkworth, you’re truly cunning.”
“Don’t you have better things to say?” Michael resumed drinking. He no longer bothered to talk to Ivan.
But Ivan became even more interested. “Later on, you prepared a surprise. The shoes were gorgeous. You really went all out, sir. I wasn’t even allowed to touch them.”
When the shoes were brought up, Michael’s face instantly darkened. This time, he did not mask his emotions. The surrounding air grew even more chilling, like a cold wind that chilled one to the bone.
Ivan sensed that too. His curiosity was roused once again. Staring at Michael, he asked, “Can you tell me what really happened that day? What happened until Ivanka couldn’t hold herself back in front of Grandma?”
Michael suddenly began drinking without a word. He downed a whole glass of wine, refilled it, then downed it at once.
Ivan sensed that he was bothered, or else he would not drink in such a way.
At that point, Ivan could not afford to upset him anymore, so he took another approach. “Why don’t you tell me about it? I don’t think you should bottle it up. Besides, don’t you want to remarry Ivanka? No matter how you feel about her, she is a good match, right? You can confide in me, and I’ll help you win her back.”
Michael pressed his lips together and said nothing.
Ivan said, “I know you’re reluctant to share, but if you keep this on, you’ll lose her for real. Is this what you want?”
Michael looked at him expressionlessly. “Are you done?”
“No!” Ivan knew that his friend was stubborn. He added, “Now Ivanka wants to stay away from you. It means that the crystal shoes must have really bothered her. Do you even know what went wrong? If you do, tell me. If you don’t want to explain it to her, I can do it subtly and let her know that you didn’t mean to upset her.”
