The Lloyd residence sat quietly behind them as the car idled out front.
Tony stood by the gate while Megan leaned against the car window, one hand pressed to her swollen cheek, which still burned from the slap.
Suddenly, noise erupted from inside the house—something crashed, then another. It sounded like splintering wood, and startled gasps followed one after another.
When Alexander emerged, he was brushing dust off his sleeves. Between his fingers, tangled in his hand, were several strands of hair.
He held up Megan's smashed phone, then casually dropped the hair to the ground.
Megan leaned against the window, watching him blankly.
"I got it back," Alexander said, ruffling her hair.
But Megan noticed something—a strand of a woman's hair was caught on the lapel of his suit, still clinging to a tiny white root.
Judging by the color and length, the hair looked like it belonged to Madison.
