Chapter 428

"I don't want to see you—go reflect on your actions," Shelmaine said. As the call ended, Samuel glanced at Luke. "Look at what you've done. I worked so hard to coax Shelly, and you've caused trouble again." Samuel then walked off and left Luke behind, not wanting to deal with him anymore. Luke sat by the pool for a long time as a strange feeling crept up. Yet, every time he tried grasping it, it slipped through his fingers. He took out his phone and realized it had shut off automatically from water damage. He ruffled his hair in frustration and borrowed a phone from a passing waiter. When Luke called Isabelle, it rang for a long time before she finally answered icily. "What do you want?" His voice was hoarse before he finally managed to speak. "What's wrong? Did you go to the hospital?" "I didn't go, and I'm not unwell. I'm boarding the plane soon." "What?" "Luke, I'm not getting any younger. Don't come bothering me if you can't give me what I want. Don't come looking for me ever again—let's just go our own ways." Luke finally understood where his uneasy feeling came from. "Isabelle, you came to me first. You fell for me first! And now you're leaving? Do you think you can just walk away like that?" She didn't want to start an argument. This wasn't the first time, and their fights always lead to nothing. She had given up on wasting her breath with him. "Just know that I'll never contact you again." With that, Isabelle hung up immediately. Luke tried calling back, but her phone was already shut off. He ran out like a madman, but it was too late. By the time he arrived at the airport, it was impossible to find her in such a large space. He had someone check her flight information, only to learn that her plane had already taken off. She was long gone. … Luke called Shelmaine, who was drinking coffee outside with Samuel opposite her. Wearing sunglasses and a coat, she was expressionless as she told Luke, "I don't know. Don't ask me." "You'd know where Isabelle went. Send her location to me." "I can't. Like I said, I don't know anything." Her tone was frosty. Having guessed who the caller was, Samuel kept quiet. He carefully fed Shelmaine a small piece of cake. "Here, honey, have a bite. Don't be mad, okay?" She pushed him away. "I don't want to eat it. Have it for yourself." "Shel, I'm begging you. Can you please tell me?" Luke was still persistent. Shelmaine handed her phone to Samuel. "Deal with your friend. I can't." He obediently took the phone and sighed. "Stop asking—Shelly doesn't know." The call ended. Samuel rubbed his nose and asked, "Honey, do you really not know where Isabelle went?" "I don't. She didn't tell me. Even if she did, I wouldn't tell Luke. You don't need to help him dig around either." "Of course not, honey. I'll always listen to you—how could I ever side with him?" "Really?" "Yes, honey. I'll only listen to you. Don't doubt me." Shelmaine smirked. "Aren't you betraying your friend, then?" "That's what friends are for. Nothing is more important than you, honey—you're the best!" Whether he truly meant it or not, Shelmaine didn't pay much attention. Her gaze lingered thoughtfully on her belly. After getting pregnant, she returned to Amberward City to focus on her health. Samuel followed her and even hired a cook so that she had proper meals when he wasn't around. Shelmaine's pregnancy brought calmness to their lives. Samuel diligently fulfilled his roles as husband and father, just as promised. There were no more scandalous rumors of him. Yet, Shelmaine struggled with controlling her emotions during her pregnancy. Every time this happened, he would instantly drop everything to comfort her. Even if he wasn't in Amberward City, one phone call from her would make him rush back in the middle of the night. This pleased Shelmaine, and her attitude toward him greatly improved. After all, he was a significant part of her life—he was her first love and husband.
