I said nothing and turned to leave the county clerk's office with Leonard trailing behind me.
"Eva..." he called out to me, his voice thick with emotion.
"Are we still friends?"
"No." I shook my head with a smile. We were no longer anything to each other. It was hard to say who owed whom. The mess of our relationship felt impossible to untangle.
But at this moment, it felt like a clean slate. A fresh start didn't seem so difficult, after all.
I waved my hand at him. "Let's just pretend we never knew each other. I'm leaving."
"Eva!" He stepped before me, and I could see the tears brimming in his eyes.
