Chapter 601 Leaving
This was the second time today that Jack had explicitly told me he wouldn't go through with the engagement. I kept my head down, unsure how to respond.
I knew the Laurence family had trapped him in this situation, but he couldn't make the matter public to maintain appearances for both families.
When we returned to the hotel, Jack insisted on walking me to my door. He even seemed ready to follow me inside, but I stopped him.
"Jack, I'm leaving tomorrow," I said, glancing at the clock. "No, actually—today."
He licked his lips, hesitated, and then nodded reluctantly.
"I know. It's probably for the best. Things here are too chaotic," he admitted. "You're at too much risk of being exposed if you stay. Go back and rest, and make sure you get a full medical check-up when you're there."
"Stop nagging," I muttered under my breath.
Without warning, he pulled me into a tight hug.
His voice was hoarse as he murmured, "Once I've taken care of everything here, I'll come to see you."
