Her mind froze for a moment. “I never expected this from you, Nelson—you still favor sons over daughters.”
Nelson’s brows furrowed at her words, and in the brief silence that followed, he nudged Grape toward Mrs. Smith, asking her to take the child to play.
“What do you mean by that?”
Callie immediately realized her words were inappropriate, but there was no taking them back. Shaking her head, she replied, “Nothing,” and turned to leave.
Before she could walk away, Nelson called after her. The reflection of their figures shimmered in the lake’s surface as they stood near the water.
“You think I let Grape take your surname because she’s a girl?”
Now that he had confronted her, Callie turned back to face him. “Isn’t that the case? If she were a boy, you—or the O’Connor family—would be rushing to write his name into the family tree.”
The O’Connor family had always been like that, for over a century.
The eldest child over the younger, sons over daughters.
