The staircase was narrow, and the air was stifling.
Nelson loosened his tie again, trying to ease the tightness in his chest. He had rushed out of an emergency meeting upon hearing about trouble with the Ellison family. He had a rough idea of what might have happened and headed straight to the hospital.
Callie, overwhelmed with guilt and unable to say a word, sat there quietly.
“Callie,” Nelson began, his tone steady but firm. “Maybe it wasn’t the best time to tell Ahmad about Grape, but it had to be said sooner or later. If he can’t accept it no matter when he hears it, then the timing doesn’t really matter.”

Nelson wasn’t one to comfort others. In fact, he could count the times he’d offered consoling words in his life, and most of them had been for Callie.
