Callie took the elevator to the top floor, staring at her own expressionless reflection in the mirrored walls. A numbness settled over her. Over the years, she had dealt with countless businesspeople—people who, like merchants, were devoid of emotion.
Regan was absent. Only her personal assistant was in the office, tidying up.
When the assistant saw Callie, a mix of surprise and fear crossed her face. “Ms. Marsh…”
Callie chuckled lightly. “What are you afraid of? I don’t bite.”
The assistant swallowed, choosing not to respond.
“Where’s Ms. Regan?”
“She’s out handling external matters.”
Callie held a contract in her hand and nodded. “I’ll give her a call.”
The phone rang for half a minute before Regan finally answered, her breath unsteady. “...Yes, Callie?”
“What’s going on over there?”
“I’m climbing a mountain with a client. It’s proving to be… quite a challenge.”
