There was a large mirror in the bathroom.
Callie took off her outer clothes and unbuttoned her inner wear until she was completely naked. She turned around, her back facing the mirror.
There, on her butterfly bone, was a cloud-like birthmark.
It was identical to Charlotte's, in the exact same spot.
Callie stared at the birthmark for a long time, remembering how she used to chase after Reuben as a child, asking, "Dad, why do I have a birthmark?"
Reuben would pat her head and say, "Do you think it's ugly?"
"No, I'm just curious why others don't have one but I do."
Every summer, she avoided wearing revealing clothes. Even with Nelson in bed, she always covered her back. When he asked, she would say she didn't like being seen from behind; it made her feel unsafe.
Nelson respected her and never forced her.
