"What were you doing at the office? Didn't you say you were going home?" Oliver's voice carried a hint of tension.
I had expected his reaction. Showing up at the office was bound to raise suspicion. I stuck to the excuse I had already prepared.
"I left something here last time. I figured I'd stop by and pick it up." I had visited his office the previous week to discuss wedding details.
Hearing the calm in my voice, Oliver likely assumed I hadn't discovered anything. His tone eased a little. "I'll have Mr. Lane drive you home."
I scoffed quietly. I knew it wasn't out of concern. He just wanted his secretary to keep tabs on me.
Still, I didn't refuse.
After leaving the building, Oliver's secretary, Chester Lane, finally pulled up. He barely spared me a glance before returning to his phone.
He'd always treated me with indifference. At first, I chalked it up to his personality. But everything shifted when I saw him open the car door for Charlotte. His respect for her was undeniable.
