The night before the court hearing, Oliver called me.
He told me to drop the divorce. If I did, he'd withdraw the lawsuit and clear my name online. "You wouldn't want your parents to come back to a company in crisis, would you?"
His tone was calm, but the threat beneath it was unmistakable.
The online backlash had already rattled a few of my parents' business partners. They were worried and had already started planning an early return. It took every bit of effort I had to reassure them and prevent them from acting hastily.
I saw right through Oliver's move. He was trying to trap me.
To him, I remained the helpless young woman he thought he could control. He bought into the narrative created by online gossip, seeing me as naive and easy to manipulate.
But this time, he was sorely mistaken.
