It wasn’t just her biological mother. The truth was also cruel to Gabriella. Why was her father not thinking about her?
Gabriella hurried to the washroom and washed her face with tap water. She looked at herself in the mirror.
“God, Gabby,” she murmured, “aren’t you tired of crying? Stop being so weak, for goodness sake!”
She bent down again and washed the tear marks from her face. Then she massaged her cheeks and smiled at herself in the mirror to appear bright and cheerful.
When she was ready to wear a bright facade, she headed back to Izaak’s hospital room. As soon as she came to the room, Izaak spoke like a child eagerly waiting for his mom to get home.
“Where have you been? I’ve been waiting for you.”
“Dad came,” she plainly responded.
Izaak peered at the doorway, waiting for the governor to emerge.
“Where is he?” he asked. “I’m pretty sure he came here to visit me, didn’t he?”
Gabriella gazed at Izaak as she walked near his bed. Izaak tapped his bed, motioning her to sit there.
