Whispered Conversations.

The house was quiet and dark, and the crickets were already chirping. I sat down on the porch, leaning into the rails and sinking into my feelings as the soft breeze whooshed around my face. There was no form of electricity here, and Wilder had said we would be doing things the local way.
I closed my eyes and took a deep breath, the clean air filling my lungs almost immediately. Then, I heard something. My eyes flew wide open, and I searched around for the voice I had heard, but I didn't see anyone in sight. Even if it was pitch dark, my senses could have picked up a figure or presence around, but I sensed nothing.
Maybe I was just imagining it. There was a lot on my mind lately, and I could just be reacting from that. I closed my eyes once again and tuned my ears to listen to the sleeping creatures.
There was another whisper, but I didn't open my eyes. This time I could hear it clearly.
“She left.” The voice was soft and calming. “She…"
