Leona’s POV
The wind had picked up on my way home, carrying the sharp, metallic coldness of approaching rain. I hugged my backpack against my chest, walking quicker, eager to reach the warmth of the house. But then I froze.
They were there.
The same two men from that night in the forest—the ones who tried to kill me. Their silhouettes leaned against a brick wall like shadows peeled from darkness. And then I heard it.
Aunt Elys’s name.
“…Elys is late. She should be leaving the market soon—”
My heart stopped.
They weren’t after me.
They were going after her.
I didn’t even think. My legs moved before my brain caught up, carrying me into a sprint so fast I nearly skidded on the pavement. Every step pounded with one thought:
I have to warn her. I have to protect her. She protected me. Now it’s my turn.
I burst through the door.
“Aunt Elys!” I gasped, chest heaving. “I—I saw them—the men from yesterday—they were talking about you—I’m sorry—I should’ve told you—I think they’re coming—please,
