"Why should she apologize? She didn't do anything wrong, yet she got punished?"
I stepped closer to Mom and pressed, my voice hardening, "Is it because no one protects her and no one speaks up for her, so you think hurting her costs nothing? Mom, that's not fair."
Megan fell silent.
The detention cell had once been used to lock up "unruly" members of the Doyle family.
I'd spent enough nights in there as a kid to remember the damp and the dark. But that all ended the day I became Alpha. House rules stopped mattering to me after that, and no one dared lay a hand on me.
The ones still being punished were the weak—the ones with no one to shield them.
Mom defended herself, "But this started because of her. If she hadn't forced Ms. Johnson to kneel and apologize, the Doyles wouldn't be facing this loss."
I let out a cold laugh. "She just defended herself. I'm the one who forced Ms. Johnson. So what now, you're going to lock me up?"
