I stared at Zack through the curtain of rain, feeling nothing but hollowness where my heart should be.
My silk dress clung to my skin, hair plastered against my cheeks, but the physical discomfort barely registered compared to the storm raging inside me.
"Who's going to protect me from you?" I asked, my voice low but sharp enough to cut glass.
His face with surprise, the confident mask slipping for just a second.
I didn't give him a chance to recover.
"I'd rather be kidnapped by rogues or die alone in the streets than be bound to you for life," I said, each word deliberate and final.
Keal said with satisfaction deep within me. "You did a good job! Sylvia."
Zack's shoulders tensed, his expression hardening into something ugly and foreign.
"The Moon Goddess will make you regret this," he threatened, voice barely audible above the drumming of rain on the metal shelter.
He turned and stalked back to his car, not bothering to look back as he drove away, tires splashing through puddle
