Chapter 337
These words do sound familiar.
Maverick didn't say a word.
After a while, Manager He came in and called them, "Mr. Hyland, Ms. Hawk, we can now proceed."
Manager He is indeed a talent.
Giselle thought that his current situation was probably due to a promotion or a raise.
When they left, almost everyone else had gone.
Only one car was left.
Judd didn't drink, so he was tasked with driving. Manager He opened the back door of the car and gestured for them to get in.
Maverick got in first. Giselle tried to open the passenger door but was stopped by Manager He, who apologized, "I'm sorry, Ms. Hawk, this seat is mine."
Giselle was ushered to the back.
After sitting down, she didn't feel right.
She felt like she was being manipulated, openly and unequivocally.
"Maverick, did you do this on purpose?"
She retorted with Maverick's own words.
Maverick glanced at her sideways, his expression a mix of a smile and a non-smile. "Did I say anything?"
Does he need to speak?
With just one glance from him, naturally, someone would hurry to get things done for him.
Giselle looked quite speechless. "Maverick, are you lacking women?"
She scoffed at Maverick.
This time, however, Maverick was undeterred. He tugged at his lip, admitting, "A bit."
This threw Giselle off balance.
After a couple of seconds of silence, she retorted, "You, the distinguished Mr. Hyland, can find women easily. Why do you keep eyeing me?"
She presumed Maverick was going to accuse her of reading too much into the situation.
However, he once again did not play by the rules.
After pondering for a few seconds, he said, "Probably because... you're beautiful?"
Giselle was speechless.
She did not deny her beauty, but responded, "Maverick, I truly have no interest in you currently."
Giselle continued, "I’ve already told you before; the matter of you wanting to keep me will not be possible."
Yet, it seemed like Maverick didn’t understand human language at all.
"What's wrong with being with me?" He even casually discussed this with Giselle, "Other than not being able to become Mrs. Bo, you can have anything you want. You're just like a caged canary, something that you used to be pretty good at."
"That was in the past."
Giselle's face darkened a little before she added, "People change, just because I could in the past, doesn't mean I can now."
"Do you still want to be Mrs. Bo?"
Maverick curled his lips, seemingly in mockery.
Giselle wondered where he got his confidence from. "I don't want to at all," she said. "Don't even mention getting back together with you, even if you wanted to, I wouldn't."
Her words caused Maverick's expression to cool.
However, his pride didn't allow him to ask further.
"That's good," he said coldly. "On this point, we agree."
After these words, there was silence in the car.
Neither of them spoke again, Giselle simply looked out of the car window.
Perhaps it was intentional, but what should have been a two-kilometer journey was purposely dragged out by Judd into a trip of more than ten kilometers.
By the time they reached the construction site, Giselle was the first to get out of the car.
The prolonged silence was too oppressive for her.
However, the wind outside was very strong. She was bare-legged and began to shiver as soon as she got out of the car.
Maverick glanced at her once, before indifferently shifting his gaze away.
He didn't want to deal with her.
Even more, he didn't want to appear too solicitous.
Yet, in the end─
He took off his coat and, without much gentleness, tossed it to Giselle.
“Put it on!”
The two words were uttered heavy like a command, with a touch of annoyance.
He didn't reveal what made him annoyed.
After speaking, he didn't even bother to spare Giselle another glance; Maverick headed towards the construction site with large strides.
He didn't have to do this in the first place.
However, since he came, he had to do it to the end.
Otherwise, it would seem like he did it on purpose.
Maverick’s clothing was tossed over to her, falling directly on Giselle's head. By the time she managed to pull the clothing off, Maverick had already walked far away.
Holding the coat, she hesitated for a while, but eventually chose not to suffer.
However, walking on the uneven construction site with high heels wasn’t easy. Giselle fell behind, walking slowly at the end of the crowd.
She really didn't understand why she, a person from the Hawk family, was brought along as Hyland Group was handing out red envelopes to the employees.
However, the cooperation between the two families indeed warranted their presence on the scene.
Having finished her obligations, Giselle then walked back.
Maverick, ever since he threw his clothes at Giselle, hadn't given her a single glance. He was aloof in the extreme.
But that was just what Giselle wanted.
She, however, was puzzled because it seemed like Maverick was angry - his anger a bit inexplicable to her.
He willingly gave his clothes to her, yet he acted as if she had taken them forcibly.
Giselle had never been good at understanding Maverick.
She used to concern herself about it, but now, it was no longer her concern.
At all times, she reminded herself to disregard anything related to Maverick.
Giselle still walked at the back, still walked slow, her path was as rugged as ever...
So rugged that she got tripped by merely being slightly distracted.
She was unable to utter a scream when she fell.
Maverick was the first one to turn his head, but he was too far from Giselle and it was too late. He could only watch as Giselle, like a clumsy penguin, fell hard on the ground.
He felt tense.
Most of all, he wanted to scold her.
Giselle always remained so, stupefied and at a complete loss.
"Hiss~"
Upon falling, Giselle let out a hiss. The ground was full of dirt, so her fall wasn't too painful. However, she still felt the pain in her legs.
Just as she was about to get up, she was suddenly hoisted into the air. By the time she came to her senses, she was already picked up by Maverick.
"You..."
"Shut up!"
Maverick, with a frown, carried Giselle straight to the car.
It wasn't until he placed her in the car that he began to examine her injuries.
No serious harm had been done, other than a scrape on her knee caused by the crushed dirt. But, it appeared exceedingly painful.
As Maverick reached out to brush the dirt off her leg, he did so gently, and naturally.
So naturally that it evoked memories of their past in Giselle.
Her heart tightened inside her chest, followed by a sense of panic.
As she drew her leg back, she moved a bit inside the car, increasing the distance between her and Maverick.
"Don't touch me," she said.
Maverick paused, then he raised his head, staring at Giselle unblinkingly.
Giselle bit her lip and repeated, "Don't touch me."
Her resistance made Maverick's face darken significantly.
Without saying a word, he got into the car and really didn't touch Giselle anymore. He coldly said to Judd sitting in the front, "Go to the hospital."
"Get to a drugstore, I will buy some ointment. That's all I need."
Giselle immediately followed.
Maverick didn’t even look at her, "Go to the hospital."
Naturally, Judd followed Maverick's instructions and drove them to the hospital.
Giselle was forced to go to the hospital, but it ended up being a minor issue. They only prescribed an ointment for her and a nurse cleaned her wounds.
"Don't worry, it's just a little skin abrasion. Don’t overreact."
After cleaning the wound, the nurse even said this sentence to Giselle, as if she were being overly dramatic.
Giselle also felt it was an overreaction to go to the hospital for such a small problem.
But Maverick did not think so.
He was even scrutinizing the nurse applying the ointment on Giselle’s wound. This made Giselle more nervous. She was genuinely afraid of Maverick's attention and concern for her.
"Maverick."
After leaving the hospital, Giselle said to Maverick, "Please... Don't get too close to me in the future and don't care about me... don't pay attention to me. It would be better if you treat me like a stranger."
She was begging him, asking him to give her a way out.
Maverick's eyes darkened considerably. He stared at Giselle for a moment and coldly emitted four words out of his thin lips, "Ungrateful!"
