I was scared.
Terrified.
The kind of fear that claws at your chest until it feels like you can’t breathe.
I couldn’t stop pacing, couldn’t stop wringing my hands until the skin turned red and raw. Every sound in the house startled me. Every shadow felt alive.
She’s waking up.
Logan’s mother.
The words replayed in my mind like a broken record. A week ago, I was told her surgery was hopeless, that she would never open her eyes again. I had allowed myself to believe it was over, that Susan and I were safe. That I was safe.
But no. The surgery went well. She survived. She was breathing. She could wake at any moment, and when she did… she would talk. She would tell Logan the truth.
