Haley’s POV:
I sat on the couch in Logan’s living room, my hands tangled in each other, twisting and untwisting until my fingers hurt. My chest felt tight, like something heavy was pressing on me.
Logan was beside me, his laptop still open but his eyes had been on me for the past few minutes. He finally shut it and leaned forward.
“Haley,” he said quietly, “what’s wrong? You’ve been pale since the hospital. Talk to me.”
I looked at him, then looked away. My lips trembled as I tried to form the words.
“It’s nothing… just—”
“Don’t say it’s nothing,” he cut me off firmly. “I know you. Something’s eating you alive. Tell me.”
My throat ached. I pressed my palms together. “Peter called me earlier.”
His brows drew together. “Peter?”
“Yes,” I whispered. “He said… my mother is really ill. She wants to see me.”
Silence fell between us. The only sound was Lily humming softly in the other room as she played with her crayons.
